The Gathering Room: RADIX: BEYOND INVALID

Radix: Beyond the Void is an intense 3D action game developed for the PC platform. While playing Radix, you will fly through the alien-infested tunnels of Theta-2 base and its massive alien ship. You will also fly beyond the Void where unknown terrors await you. It will take great persistence and skill to navigate the little assault fighter through winding tunnels and corridors to successfully complete your mission. (Un) fortunately, heavy alien resistance will interfere with your target.

Radix: Beyond the Void has 3 large chapters, each consisting of 8 normal missions and one secret mission. The action is uninterrupted, with only small breaks for mission briefings. In each mission, you’ll have a unique primary objective, ranging from action-packed search and destruction to stealth exploration missions. Before each mission, the briefing information details the location of the targets as well as the enemy alien activity.

You have full control of the game, including lateral / horizontal movement and freedom to fly in any direction. Dangers like enemy ships, mindless alien zombies, missile ramps, broken floors and ceilings, steeply sloping tunnels, tractor beams, gravity wells and more will try to prevent you from completing your mission.

If you’re going to duplicate something, at least do it differently. Here’s Radix: Beyond the Void from Epic MegaGames. At first glance, this shooter from the mid 90’s looks like a simple Descent clone; You take control of an airplane navigating a tunnel maze without the force of gravity stopping you. It takes on the task of destroying a sci-fi foe while dealing with your path-finding skills (or shortcomings).

It’s everything Radix does differently. For example, your ship is a warplane. Futuristic but still a jet. You can’t stand still, so you can only control your speed in two – slow and fast. To feel the need for speed, you hold down the right mouse button, tapping the / button will make your afterburner detonate so you can really feel the g-force.

For the most part, levels use this mechanic. It is not overt or overly complicated, but essentially consists of long, meandering corridors outside of some arena-sized areas where most of the combat takes place.

The combat is pretty good too. Enemies have their own patterns to watch out for, such as moving randomly in front of you or maneuvering and chasing behind you. Fortunately, you can shoot behind you by holding down the Enter key, but remember that you’re still moving forward. It is easy to hit the walls as it is.

The ultimate goal is to reach the end by destroying as many enemies as possible. Often, the target is blocked, forcing you to find a key or blow up before you can continue. Slaughter is quite satisfying and I highly recommend it.
